Ms. P. Ortelli - Teacher, Head of the Arts, Band and Choir Director

I became a music teacher because I had a wonderful high school experience both in music and sports and I wanted to bring that positive experience to other teenagers.  Going to university, I knew I wanted to learn as much as possible about all the instruments involved in a high school program.  I also knew that I wanted to work specifically with teenagers because they are an amazing group of people.

I spent the first seven years of my teaching career leading the music program at Mitchell District High School.  I then came to Central and taught music, English, history and student success.  Working with Tim Gilbert in the music program at Central for 14 years was an incredible experience.  I had the opportunity to teach wind and percussion instruments, vocal music, and orchestral strings.  In the extra-curricular program, I directed the  Junior Band, Concert Band, Central Singers, the string ensemble, began Vocal Chords, and led the music for two musicals.  When Mr. Gilbert retired in 2015, I became Head of the Arts at Central and took over the leadership of the music program.  In this role, I have been given the opportunity to work with several other great music teachers who I respect and admire, plus a wonderful group of students.

Teenagers are a joy to work with, and the students at Central are no exception.  They are talented, hard-working, eager to learn, and willing to go above and beyond to support the school and the music program.  Attend a concert, go to a coffee house, listen to them rehearsing...they truly are an incredible group of people and I am proud to be their music teacher.

I truly have the best job in the world!
